IACLE educators to join AOCLE Annual Workshop

Contact lens educators from Colombia and India will travel to the United States next month for the Annual Workshop of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators (AOCLE).

Thanks to support from the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE) and AOCLE, Dr Lina María Rodríguez Cely from the Federación Colombiana de Optómetras, Colombia and Premjit Bhakat from the Department of Optometry, School of Allied Health Sciences at Manipal University, India will be representing IACLE at the workshop, which takes place at the University of Missouri – St Louis College of Optometryfrom 1-4 June.

‘The bad, the good and the technology’ is the title for this year’s workshop, an industry-sponsored event hosted by a different optometry school each year.

‘It’s a great honor for me to represent IACLE at the forthcoming AOCLE workshop,’ said Dr Cely. ‘Attending an event of this magnitude gives me the opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences with contact lens educators from different parts of the United States and from different countries. It also allows me to learn more about the development of new technologies and acquire knowledge that will help me to improve my professional performance.’

Associate Professor Bhakat commented: ‘IACLE’s nomination as a representative to attend the AOCLE 2017 workshop was a great surprise to me.  I’m delighted to be a recipient of this great opportunity. By attending this meeting I’ll have the chance to meet distinguished educators, researchers and clinicians, especially from North America but also from various parts of the world. It will also be a privilege to meet dignitaries and executive members of AOCLE and IACLE. I’m really excited to be part of this event!’

In a separate development, Kristina Mihi? from the University of Applied Sciences Velika Gorica in Croatia will be the recipient of the 2017 IACLE Travel Award. Thanks to a bursary from IACLE and support from the British Contact Lens Association, Kristina will attend the 40th BCLA Clinical Conference in Liverpool, UK from 9-11 June and the Education Day organized by IACLE and the British Universities Committee of Contact Lens Educators (BUCCLE) for 8 June. She replaces Professor Martha Lucila Márquez García of Colombia, who is now unable to travel to the meetings.

‘I really can’t voice enough how much this award means to me,’ said Ms Mihi?. ‘For many years, I wanted to visit BCLA Conference, but until now I haven’t had the opportunity. I was both surprised and delighted to have been chosen for the Travel Award. I want to thank IACLE for this opportunity.’

IACLE Vice President Dr Luigina Sorbara commented: ‘Congratulations to all of our travel award recipients! IACLE is dedicated to having global representation at international meetings from our membership. Thank you to our sponsors for their support in allowing this to happen. We are looking forward to seeing all of our awardees at the meetings and hope they will continue to benefit from the experience.’
